THAI TAMARIND SODA RECIPE (NAM MAKAM SODA)
Beat the heat with a wonderfully unique and refreshing Thai Tamarind Soda (Nam Makam Soda). This easy-to-make mocktail perfectly balances the sweet and tangy flavour of tamarind concentrate with the fizz of soda water. It’s a brilliant alternative to your usual fizzy drink, offering a sophisticated and authentic taste of Thailand. Perfect for a summer’s day or as a digestif after a rich meal.
Ingredients (for 1 serving)
- 2-3 tbsp Tamarind Concentrate (seedless paste)
- 2-3 tbsp Simple Syrup (see Note) or to taste
- A tiny pinch of Salt (optional, but recommended)
- 150-200ml Soda Water, chilled
- Plenty of Ice Cubes
Method
- Create the Tamarind Base: In a tall glass, combine the tamarind concentrate, simple syrup, and the pinch of salt (if using). Stir everything together thoroughly until you have a smooth, well-combined base.
- Add Ice: Fill the glass to the top with ice cubes.
- Top with Soda: Slowly pour the chilled soda water over the ice to fill the glass.
- Stir and Garnish: Give the drink a gentle stir to mix the tamarind base with the soda.
- Serve: Serve immediately with a straw and enjoy the refreshing tang!
Note
- Tamarind Concentrate: This is a thick, seedless paste made from tamarind pulp, which you can find at talardthai.com. It’s much easier to use than starting with whole tamarind pods.
- Simple Syrup: To make simple syrup, just gently heat equal parts caster sugar and water in a saucepan until the sugar has completely dissolved. Let it cool before using. It mixes into cold drinks much better than plain sugar.
- Balance is Key: The perfect Tamarind Soda has a lovely balance of sweet and sour. Feel free to adjust the amount of tamarind concentrate or simple syrup to suit your personal taste.
- Fancy a tipple? For an alcoholic version, a shot of dark rum or vodka would work wonderfully with these flavours. Add it in step 1.
