O-LIANG, THAI-STYLE COFFEE RECIPE
O-Liang is Thailand’s bold, sweet, and smoky iced black coffee – served over crushed ice and perfect for a hot summer’s day. Brewed with a unique blend of roasted coffee and grains, it’s a nostalgic street-style drink found across Thai markets.
INGREDIENTS (FOR 1–2 SERVINGS)
- 3 tablespoons O-Liang powder (Thai-style black coffee blend)
- 350 ml water
- 2–3 tablespoons white sugar (adjust to taste)
- Optional: 1 tablespoon palm sugar for depth of flavour
- Crushed ice or ice cubes
Method
- Brew the coffee:
Bring the water to a boil. Add the O-Liang powder and boil for 3–5 minutes. Turn off the heat and let it steep for a few minutes. - Strain the coffee:
Pour the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or a traditional Thai coffee sock filter to remove the grounds. - Sweeten it:
While the coffee is still hot, add white sugar (and palm sugar if using) and stir until fully dissolved. Let it cool. - Serve:
Fill a tall glass with crushed ice. Pour the sweetened coffee over the ice and serve immediately.
